Wine and local history

The lake "Kerkinitis is located in the southeastern part of the current valley in the prefecture of Serres. Formed by the waters of the Strymon river and strengthened by water and other tributaries. From the southern tip of Lake River Strymon continue the path and through the Strait of Amphipolis poured Strimonikos bay.

The lake indicate the name of the second century AD by Arrian in his "Alexandrou Anabasis”.

As old as humanity itself

The origin of the vine is older than human himself. According to paleontologists, vine’s history goes back million years ago. Findings of fossil vines which are estimated to be 60 million years old are considered to be the older scientific proof of the vine’s age. Even before the Iced Age the cultivation of vines was growing in the polar areas, especially in Island, in North Europe but also in North-West Asia.

Pethelinos in Serres

The population of Pethelinos comes up to 596 residents.
Pethelinos is a village, which grew in different places. The archaeological findings which were found in the area indicate that the village was established during the Classical Times and continued to exist during the Hellenistic times, the Roman Times and the Byzantine Time. The place as known today has been founded at the beginning of the Turkish domination.

Oenotourism in Serres - Wine explorations

Serres have a great tradition in the production of Greek Ouzo. However, during the last years, the wine production has met a huge development and put the place on the wine-production map for good. In the years to come it is expected that oenotourism (visiting to learn everything about wine and the way it is produced) will be increased in Serres.

«Legends around Wine»

Routes along wine tastes and meeting with the local wine producers.
The Association of Serres for the UNESCO and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry invite you to the 1st gathering for wine, with subject “Legends around Wine” which will take place on the 6th December 2010 and time 20:30 at the hotel Elpida(Hope) in room *Elia* (Olive) for experiencing and tasting the different varieties of the wines, produced by the wine producer Apostolos Goulas from Pethelinos in Serres. The main purpose of the organizers is the presentation and the promotion of the Greek and international wine production to the consumer and trade public.

Our varieties and their history

Malagouzia is one of the most aromatic varieties of the Greek grapes. It comes from the mountainous Nafpaktia. The modern history of the variety starts at the beginning of the ‘70s, when Euaggelos Gerovasileiou with the help of the professor of the Agricultural University of the Thessaloniki Prof. Lgothetis, planted some rare Greek varieties at the Porto Caras Farm, where Mr Gerovasileiou worked as an enologist. This rare and very interesting variety of grapes did not take long to be distinguished due to its intense aroma which reminded Muscat, opening the way for the first varietal wines at the beginning of the ‘90s.
